PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Manager – Geotechnical Engineering serves as the leader of an engineering department to ensure that both the needs of all departmental clients and the needs of the business are met by his or her departmental team members. The Manager also serves as a technical, project management and client service role model for the less experienced members of the project team and as a resource for resolving the most difficult of challenges associated with the business of geotechnical engineering. This role requires strong analytical skills in area of geotechnical engineering, including but not limited to soil and rock classification, slope stability analysis, earth retention systems, and shallow, deep, and specialized foundation analysis and design.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manages all resources (personnel, equipment, materials, etc.) within the department.
- Lead, develop, and mentor engineers for continuous improvement of technical expertise and professional development.
- Oversee the scheduling, assignment, and coordination of projects for team to ensure clients’ cycle times and quality expectations are met.
- Provide ongoing training to team members on technical matters and departmental processes.
- Accountable for performance and quality of department.
- Determine how to use and/or reorganize resources to meet schedules and goals, both within the department and in partnership with other departments.
- Ensure the quality and accuracy of calculations, reports, and drawings produced by the team.
- Perform final review of geotechnical reports, calculations, and recommendations completed by other engineers.
- Exercise technical responsibility required within areas of technical competence which could include sealing engineering work performed by the team.
- Keep abreast of new technical methods and developments in engineering.
- Provide reporting on the performance of the department to management.
- Manage specified clients for full understanding of client requirements, processes, and workflow.
- Act as the main point of contact for specified clients, in partnership with the business development team.
- Lead the identification, prioritization, and resolution of problems and assessment of team members’ skills and performance.
- Completes QA/QC reviews as part of an internal Quality Control program.
- Significant knowledge of ASTM standards that govern the work.
- Understand and be able to explain the relationship of geotechnical work to the needs of structural engineers.
- Lead and oversee creation of new in-house tools, and updating current tools, for engineering analysis calculations.
- Provide engineering assistance and recommendations for any field-related or client questions.
- Lead development of proposals and pricing for geotechnical engineering work.
- Assists VP with budget development of department.
- Understands financial implications of decisions and forecasts/reports financial results.
- Recommends and creates changes to policies and procedures that affect department.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads hiring process of new staff.
- Reviews department performance metrics on an on-going basis and develops recovery or PIP plans as needed.
- Finds solutions to prevent escalation and resolve issues as needed.
- Implements preventative and corrective actions promptly.
- Direct involvement in compensation and job change actions of employees within department.
- Leads performance reviews for employees under direct supervision.
- Holds regular one-on-one meetings with employees under direct supervision.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Maintains a positive and professional demeanor while representing FDH.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures of FDH.
- Understands and follows FDH and customer systems for filing and retrieving reports/data.
- Supports accounting and business development activities as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
