More about our Transportation Services department: UW Transportation Services is a department within Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) on the UW-Madison campus. We serve a variety of customers with a diverse set of parking and transportation needs. Transportation Services is responsible for the coordination and administration of all transportation-related services for the UW campus community. Primary functions include the sale/management of parking permits, special event coordination, maintenance and enforcement, construction coordination, lot and booth operations, citation payments and appeals, information technology, financial, transportation planning, and development of multimodal options.
More about the Transportation Engineer Position. The Transportation Engineer is a position with the Transportation department within the Facilities Planning and Management Division at UW Madison. Transportation Services currently has a Transportation Planner whose main responsibility is to develop and implement transportation planning and programming to address transportation issues on campus. The Planner does this, as well as ensures the traffic plans, map updates and communication needs are also completed for campus construction and maintenance projects. The Transportation Engineer position that is intended to support planning and programming efforts to improve transportation in and around campus. The Engineer will be able to support the Planner in their efforts to plan and coordinate transportation needs for campus projects, events and construction. The Transportation Engineer position will work with project teams, city traffic engineering and other stakeholders to review, coordinate, and develop plans to accommodate all these projects and maintain access to campus. The Transportation Engineer will also work closely with the facilities management and GIS teams to ensure current and future projects are coordinated and tracked to reduce overlapping conflicts where possible. Collaborate on campus roadway pavement markings, parking facility wayfinding, and traffic signage projects. The Transportation Engineer position will work with project teams, city traffic engineering and other stakeholders to review, coordinate, and develop plans to accommodate all these projects and maintain access to campus. The Transportation Engineer will also work closely with the facilities management and GIS teams to ensure current and future projects are coordinated and tracked to reduce overlapping conflicts where possible. Collaborate on campus roadway pavement markings, parking facility wayfinding, and traffic signage projects.
Supports several initiatives related to traffic engineering, transportation operations, technology applications, and multistate transportation operations coalitions to improve transportation.
10% Utilizes and evaluates emerging technologies, such as surveillance/traffic detection technologies
20% Supports updates, needs assessments, and tracking for activities related to planning for operations
20% Utilizes geographic information systems with spatial inventory for planning, maintenance, and stakeholder coordination activity
10% Supports the development and application of traffic engineering and analytical models using a variety of software
20% Monitors, collects, and analyzes traffic operations and technological deployments
5% Serves as a unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups regarding street issues
5% Keep up with the MUTCD re: signs, channelizing devices, pavement markings, etc. and provides recommendations and approvals for campus roadways.
10% Capability to develop, review, and correct traffic control plans for major construction projects, including pedestrian, bike, and bus needs.
